Confusing item equipping process

From looking at the character sheet, it is unclear whether equipping items has any effect - it doesn't seem to change my stats to match the bonuses on the item description. Other items, such as my ring of protection, seem to be unequippable, and the item description does not explain what it does (should be +1 to saving throws and AC).
