NPCs need motivation

I think one thing that is missing from NPCs is what motivates them. I would like to see an addition to the character sheet with a box for motivation. A description of what it is they are trying to do in the world or who they want to be. Maybe this could get covered in the personality section, but i also feel that this should be separate as well because i want to be able to choose to hide this from the player (a per character toggle that is off by default) so that you are not always aware of the NPC’s motive. It could also be something that changes over time. i am not sure how well it would work, but it would be neat if you could make it so Franz can alter the motive if there is a big event that changes the character(a read only and read/write toggle for Franz, the player could always still change it). If character A’s motive is to always protect character B, and then character C comes along and kills B. The motive could change based on A’s personality. If A’s personality is unforgiving, then the motive may change to getting revenge on B(if they are weak they may try to hire someone, if it is strong they then would try to do it themselves). If they are a pacifist then they may want to do something to remember B by like build a memorial or travel to a special location to spread the ashes. This could be expanded upon by including minor motivations(i want to get a new pair of shoes) and major motivations(revenge on C) or short term(i want to go see the waterfall) and long term motivations(i want to get married and have a family). I feel like this would bring more life to characters and allow players to get swept up into their stories.
