Travel Time Isn't Accurate

Check out what the travel time that the measurement tool gave me for 496 km (that’s 308 miles) About three and half days. If you’ve done any amount of hiking or backpacking you know this isn’t accurate. Even if you were walking on flat pavement you’d be hard pressed to do that. If you were extremely fit and doing a very brisk walk in light olympic clothing and someone else was carrying all your food and water, then maybe…

When I was a fit older teen, I did 40 miles in five days in the back country. That’s hiking about eight hours a day carrying my own camping gear. I was pretty wiped out. Anyway, it doesn’t seem accurate (see footnote). Fifteen to twenty miles a day on level, easy terrain seems reasonable.

For a fantasy centric game, wilderness travel is a big deal so players need some control by providing a base travel rate and Current Terrain Factor that they can apply to that rate until Franz gets good enough to figure this all out. I’d also like to be able to have the measurement tool display in miles.

Footnote:

From a web search (AI generated—and we know how accurate those are, but it’s something)

  • The distance a human can walk in 24 hours on level pavement varies widely based on factors such as fitness level, training, and pace. Generally, a fit hiker might cover 20-30 miles in a day, while an average hiker could manage 10-16 miles, and a beginner might walk 6-8 miles. However, under optimal conditions and with a steady pace, an individual could potentially walk up to 40 miles in 15 hours, which translates to about 2.67 miles per hour. The greatest distance walked in 24 hours is a remarkable 142 miles, achieved by Jesse Castenda in 1976, showcasing the extreme end of human endurance.

  • The distance a human can hike over rough terrain in 24 hours varies widely depending on factors such as fitness level, terrain difficulty, and elevation changes. Experienced hikers can cover distances ranging from 18 to 30 miles in a day, with some even managing more than 25 miles. On untracked forest terrain, an average hiking speed is often around 2.5 miles per hour, which could translate to about 20 miles in a day for well-conditioned hikers. For steep or mountainous terrain, the pace slows down significantly, and the distance covered can be much less, typically around 1 to 3 miles per hour.
